Shrubs that bloom and shrubs that screen
Shrubs available at Sherbondy’s:
- Althea or Rose of Sharon It is a zone 5 plant and comes in a multiple of double flowers and as a patio tree form.
- Aronia is available in ornamental and edible fruiting varieties.
- Barberry bushes we sell them in all colors, shapes, varieties and sizes. Full sun for best color.
- Butterfly Bush is hardy in our climate, but requires a yearly pruning.
- Boxwoods We sell green velvet. The deer do not eat it. It is the hardiest growing evergreen shrub we sell. It can be shaped into a hedge and be kept trimmed to a one foot height or left to grow to at least 4 feet. The other variety we sell is Green Mountain. We like it shaped to a pyramid. Because it grows more upright than the green velvet it is more suitable for a taller hedge or more of an upright oval shaped shrub.
- Cotoneasters require adequate moisture.
- Dogwoods offers a spectacular visual display for all seasons.
- Flowering Quince is a vibrant orangey red flower. A dense growing shrub and some varieties are thorny.
- Deutzia dwarfs have a fun white flower and grows well in part shade.
- Dwarf Burning bush is a beautiful bright red shrub in the fall.
- Euonymus varieties are low spreading. Usually gold and green or white and green.
- Forsythia is great for a spring flowering hedge or screen, is also low maintenance.
- Hibiscus varieties are hardy in our area, but will winterkill to the ground and resurrect themselves the next summer with massive brightly colored flowers. They need yearly pruning.

- Holly (Ilex varieties) the hollies need to stay out of our winter sun. It dries out their foliage and our frozen soil hugs water, so they dry out and die. If you plant them buy the varieties that have both the male and female plants growing together to get the red berries.
